| Administrative History | Professional Committee was set up in September 1995 as Membership Services Committee, thanks to a proposal made by Vice-Presidents. It took on some of the functions and members of the Promotions Committee, scrapped earlier in the year. Initially its principal aims were to improve services to members, promote renewal of the Society, and communicate new initiatives to appropriate committees. It officially became the Professional Board in April 1998, then Professional Standing Committee in May 2001, and finally Professional Committee in March 2011.
It promotes professional excellence and ethical standards in the Earth Sciences for the public good through defining, maintaining and developing high professional standards for geoscientists, and their promoting career development.
In 2020, Council agreed to a merger between the Professional Committee and the Chartership Committee. The Professional and Chartership Committee first met in June 2020. It's aims are to promote professional excellence and ethical standards in the Earth Sciences for the public good, achieved through: defining, maintaining and developing high professional standards for geoscientists; promoting career development for geoscientists. |
