Administrative HistoryWithin the Archives is a printed notice issued by the photographer's studio Maull & Polyblank announcing the formation of a carte de visite series of Geological Society Fellows, probably dating from between 1864-1865. It is likely that much of the series GSL/POR/43-50 were either derived from or inspired by this project as the majority of images are photographed by Maull & Polyblank and its successor companies.

Very few of the earlier portraits are dated, instead date spans are based on the activities and names of the photographers, ie Maull & Polyblank (active 1854-1865), Maull & Co (active 1865-1877), Maull & Fox (active 1877-1928) and the popularity and design of the format used. For portraits of Fellows who were elected from the 1880s onwards, the date of the supplied portrait is more likely to be contemporary with their date of election.
ArrangementSeries GSL/POR/43-52 were originally housed in photographic albums. The original series and order have been retained.
