DescriptionThe Greenough Map Collection: printed topographic maps dating between 1758 and 1853, some of which are either coloured and/or annotated by George Bellas GREENOUGH. Some early examples contain field observations, but most are the result of extensive literature searches. Most parts of the world are represented, though western Europe and India are most thoroughly covered.

Note: the dates and languages given, in most cases, refer to the base maps.
Administrative HistoryOn his death, George Bellas Greenough bequeathed to the Society his geological library of books, maps and prints which were integrated into the Library's collections. The books now form part of the Library's rare book collection and the surviving prints and most of the annotated maps were added to Archive collection when it was formed in the early 1980s. The rest of the maps are held within the Map collection, but as most are actually annotated in some form or other, they will be added to this series presently. There is no definitive listing of Greenough's maps, but most (with a few exceptions) appear in the list of maps and charts in the 1860 Library printed catalogue alongside the other new accessions acquired during the period 1856-1859. Note: that from the 1930s there was a weeding of the collections due to storage issues and non-geological material was removed. A number of items may have been disposed of.
