DescriptionEngraving 'Rarissime Ossa fossili di Mammiferigia possedute dal Cav. Felice Fontana ed'ora esistente in Cefalonia nel Museo Valsamachi’ drawn by Antonio Serantonio for the Museum of Count Demetrio Valsamachi, [1816]. The print shows views of parts of the skull, jaw and femur bones from an elephant which were once in the collection of the Italian physicist Felice Fontana (1730-1805) and now in the Museum of Count Demetrio Valsamachi, Cefalonia, Greece.
CustodialHistoryThe previous catalogue mistakenly recorded the bones as being found in a cave deposit, however this was a mistranslation of 'Cav.' before Felice Fontana's name. 'Cav' is an abbreviation of 'Cavaliere', an italian knighthood.
ProvenancePresented by Valsamachi, 23 September 1816
