DescriptionRough geological map of Tasmania by unknown author, [1871-1884], comprising manuscript geological colouring on printed base map 'Walch's new map of Tasmania', H G de Gruchy & Co. Lithographers, Melbourne,[1871.]. Scale: 20 miles to one inch. Sectioned and on linen.

Probably based in part on the survey work of Charles Gould, geological surveyor of Tasmania.
Administrative HistoryThere is no date or provenance relating to the map, but there is an annotation on the sheet which states: 'See Geol Map in Roy Soc Tasm Proc for 1885'. This publication reference concerns the 1884 geological map compiled by C P Sprent and B M Johnston which used as a basis the partial surveys of Tasmania conducted by Charles Gould in the 1860s.

Some of the colouring used in this item bears similarities to some of Gould's work, and it may be this is a rough draft attempting to sketch in the geology of the whole island, there being blank spaces in the interior.
