DescriptionCopy of 'Illustrations of the geology of Yorkshire; or A description of the strata and organic remains: accompanied by a geological map, sections, and diagrams, and figures of the fossils', by John Phillips, 2 vols, 2nd edition, 1835-1836. Both volumes have been bound together.

Inside the front cover, and halfway inside are a small number of mss notes taken from geological published sources covering palaeontological, ore or stratigraphical findings by others, apparently written by a 'John Turner of York' [?member of the Yorkshire Philosophical Society perhaps], probably copied in the 1840s-1850s. Two of the abstracts are: J G Cumming, "On the Tertiary Deposits of the Moray Firth and the Great Caledonian Valley, with a brief notice of the Older Formations", QJGS, vol 6 (1850) pp10-17; William Branwhite Clarke, "Extracts from a Memoir on the Geological Structure and Phænomena of the County of Suffolk, and its Physical Relations with Norfolk and Essex", Transactions of the Geological Society of London, Series 2, Volume 5 (1840), pp359-383.
ProvenanceBelonged to Miss Elizabeth Bulmer, who taught geography at a girl's grammar school in York. Was given to the depositor's father, who was a senior geography master at a boy's grammar school. Donated to the Society through the depositor's relative who is a member of the Society, May 2016.
