Administrative HistoryFormed of the President, the Secretaries, the Foreign Secretary and four or five ordinary members of Council. The Awards Committee's initial remit was to shortlist pools of candidates for the awarding of the Wollaston, Murchison, Lyell, Bigsby, Coke, Prestwich and Sue Tyler Friedman Medals; the Wollaston, Murchison and Lyell Funds; the R H Worth Prize; the President's Award; Honorary Fellowships, which are then voted for by members of Council.

On 5 November 1913, Council ordered that the selection of names to fill the vacancies of Foreign Members and Correspondents be referred to the Awards of Medals and Funds Committee. From the mid 1990s, the Committee also oversaw the awarding of the William Smith Medal.
