| Administrative History | On 5 June 1839, Council requested that the President, William Buckland, set up a new Map Committee to oversee the production of the second edition of Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales. The first meeting was held on 20 November 1839. Buckland appointed Henry Warburton, Greenough & John Taylor to committee. William Lonsdale was to act as secretary.
Greenough again underwrote the expenses for the drafting of the Geological Map [£718 2s 5d], but the Society was to organise any matters connected with its printing, colouring and sale. Income from the sales of the Map were to first defray these costs, thereafter Greenough would be recompensed.
The sales figures in the volume up to no.224 refer to the second edition proper. In 1857 a new Map Committee was appointed to revise the map again, and it was ordered that an additional 25 sheets of each were to be produced for its aid. Any sheets leftover were to be sold at 2s each, along with attempting to sell the stock of separate Wales sheets which had been produced earlier. Plates 3 and 5 were ready first and these were issued in 1860, classed in the sales ledger as a 'Third edition'. The last sheet to be revised was sheet 4, which was finally ready in May 1865. In June 1865 Council ordered that 50 copies of the full map were to be produced in the first instance. In the ledger this was classed by the Clerk as the 'Fourth edition'.
A fully copy of the second edition sold to Fellows for £4 and £5 to the public. The third edition was substantially cheaper - £2 2s for Fellows and £2 16s to the public as it was sold for almost cost price. |
