Administrative History | The Regional Groups originally derived from the activities of the Institution of Geologists (IG), but once that organisation merged with the Society at the end of 1990, they became Regional Groups of the Geological Society. The original Regional Groups Committee oversaw the activities of and grants to the various Regional Groups. It is unclear when the Committee dissipated as the records are incomplete, but possibly the last meeting was held in 2000.
In 2002 a 'Regional Groups Co-ordination Committee' was established. Similar to its predecessor, its terms of reference were: the co-ordination of financial and other reporting and returns from Regional Groups to the Society; recommendation of annual grants; communication of Regional Group representations to Council and the other Standing Committees via the Professional Standing Committee; facilitating communication between Regional Groups, sharing of expertise, and running of joint activities with other Regional or Specialist Groups; communication of Geological Society strategy and developments to the Regional Groups (especially regarding professional matters).
In April 2009 it was recommended that the committee be abolished. However it has restarted recently on a more casual basis, verbally reporting to the Professional Committee.
Note: Whilst there is no longer any formal documentation produced by the Committee, the annual submissions from the Regional Groups are still a prerequisite to obtain funding from the Society. |
