DescriptionSecretary's In letters: From Henry Riley, BRISTOL INSTITUTION, Bristol. Re: reluctance of the Committee of the Bristol Institution to send a fossil fish specimen from Lyme in its collection to Louis Agassiz, instead suggests sending the published drawing from a recent paper to be compared, 2 Oct 1834.
Administrative HistoryThe fossil in question is the Squaloraja found by Mary Anning in Lyme Regis around or before 1829. It was purchased from Mary Anning by John Nash/Naish Sanders who donated it to the Bristol Institution in 1831. A paper, by Henry Riley, was read before the Society on 15 May 1833. The final published paper uses a copy of Louis Agassiz's lithographic plate from his 'Recherches sur les Poissons' (1833-1843/4), (see Council Minutes, 9 March 1836 GSL/CM/1/4).
