DescriptionSecretary's In Letters: from Samuel STEVENS, [Natural History Agent], Bloomsbury Street, London, 23 May 1849. Re: Two friends are currently on a commercial trip collecting natural history specimens in South America along the Amazon, could provide geological specimens to the Society.
Administrative HistoryThe two friends referred to in the letter are likely to be the naturalists Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) and Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913). Samuel Stevens set up the Natural History Agency in 1848 and sold their finds with a 25% commission to collectors in Britain which funded their exploration work.
