| Administrative History | Thomas Sheppard, Fellow and curator to Hull's municipal museums, was invited by Council, on the recommendation of the Library Committee, to inspect the Society's collection of British maps in February 1917. He was granted ten guineas for expenses for the initial survey and subsequently (in March 1917) a further sum not exceeding £30 was set aside for the purpose of completing the catalogue. Also in March 1917 a sum of £250 was earmarked for the publication of the catalogue.
Due to the time consuming nature of the work combined with Sheppard's curatorial duties in Hull, much of catalogue descriptions had to be undertaken outside of the Society - in Sheppard's home in Hull. However, it is believed that his house was bombed during the First World War which destroyed most of his project work. All that remains is the typescript indexes and a couple of pages of proofs for the planned printed catalogue of 'British Geological Maps'. |
