Description | 'Gold' and laquer snuff box (containing snuff) with a dog and ruined column in mosaic, presented to William Buckland by Emperor Alexander of Russia, 1825. Interior of lid is engraved with dedication in Latin. Three dimensional yellow gold frame and catch on exterior, either rose gold (or copper) interior. Note: item is not hallmarked nor is there a maker's mark. |
Provenance | According to the AGM of 1946, a gold snuff box set with mosaic, the gift of the Czar Alexander of Russia in 1825 to Dean William Buckland in acknowledgement of a copy of his 'Reliquae Diluvinae' was presented to the Society by Mr C W Gowthorpe.
