Administrative History | Until 1810, when the Council was officially founded, all business concerning the running of the Society was discussed at the Ordinary Meetings. Additionally, the volumes also contain the minutes of the first few decades' Annual General Meetings and Special General Meetings. Aside from this, typical information includes: names of visitors present (and the Fellows who introduced them); names of proposed Fellows and those who have been elected, including Honorary, later Foreign Fellows and Correspondents; lists of books, maps, specimens and drawings presented to the Society with names of donors; papers and communications read before the Society. Between February 1812 to January 1838, the papers were referenced in relative detail, but after this period only the title and author are mentioned. After 1853, donations are no longer listed individually. |
Publication Note | Between 1811-1856, selected papers and lists of donations to the Society were published in 'The Transactions of the Geological Society of London', series 1 & 2. 'The Proceedings of the Geological Society of London', 1827-1845, contained reports of the Ordinary Meetings, including abstracts (later longer and illustrated versions) of all papers read. From 1845, selected papers were then published in the 'Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society of London' [later 'Journal of the Geological Society of London'], however another publication issued between 1857-1971 entitled 'Abstracts of the Proceedings of the Geological Society of London', again contained abstracts of all papers and discussions at Ordinary Meetings. |
