Description
Portrait of Charles Lyell, aged 43 years, painted by Alexander Craig during the British Association Meeting in Glasgow, August 1840. Oil on board, 202mm x 258mm.

The painting was on show in the Society's Lyell Room until 2013, when it was transferred to the Archives.
Provenance
Information written on the label at the back of the frame [now removed]: 'Purchased by Graham Lea (with several others by the same artist) at Sotheby's, London in the mid-1970s. Sold by him (after years of badgering) to Stuart Baldwin on 20th June 1997'. Donated to the Geological Society by Stuart Baldwin on 7 March 2008.
