Extent1 item
FormatDocument
DescriptionLarge cartoon of an oil rig ‘Sea Gem’ with caption “We’re getting a tremendous amount of Natural Gas from Scarborough!”, by JAK, [1965]. An annotation on the bottom right, now faded, reads "To Norman Falcon with best wishes for a "better 'ole" from JAK". 55cm x 67.5cm.

Note: the cartoon is not drawn perfectly, ie masking fluid used to correct at least three areas of the drawing, so it may have been the artwork for a published cartoon, presumably in the Evening Standard.
Administrative HistoryThe framed cartoon was presented to Norman Leslie Falcon on his retirement from BP in 1965, the same year that BP found the first gas in the North Sea.

JAK aka Raymond Jackson (1927-1997) was a political cartoonist who drew for the Evening Standard from 1952 until his death in 1997.
CustodialHistoryNever accessioned but its donation appeared in an article in 'Geoscientist' in January 2009.
ProvenanceDonated by Michael Falcon, probably in 2008.
