FEBRUARY 1986 John W Peirce, Manager, Gravity/Magnetics, Petro-Canada Resources, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, a colleague is having some success applying Wernicke's drifting model to the Grand Banks and Galicia Bank, but has heard that one of McKenzie's students has found a problem with it, 17 December 1985, with copy reply from McKenzie, stating that he has not yet found any evidence that supports Wernicke's proposal that the lithospheric extension is displaced laterally from normal faulting in the upper crust, 14 February 1986;
MARCH 1986 Typescript submission for the IUGG Quo Vadimus Symposium, Vancouver 1987, on the topic of "Lateral Heterogeneity of the Earth" by Dr R J Banks, University of Lancaster, at the request of the British National Committee for Geodesy and Geophysics, with covering letter from Banks stating that although McKenzie and he were to submit a joint proposal, he has not been able to contact him and so is submitting separately, 26 March 1986; Peter Bartzakos, second year undergraduate, Department of Geological Sciences, McGill University, Montreal, Canada, whilst studying for a geology paper he spotted an error in the geometric terminology used in the paper :McKenzie, D & W J Morgan, "The evolution of triple junctions", 'Nature', vol 224 (1969), pp125-133, with brief copy reply from McKenzie stating that Bartzakos is not the first to point out the error but it does not affect the results, 26 March 1986;

MAY 1986 Copy letter from McKenzie to William 'Bill' Brace, Chairman, Department of Earth, Atmospheric & Planetary Sciences, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, complaining about the circumstances of Barry Parson's departure from MIT, and that it, Yale and Harvard will gain a reputation as places post doctoral researchers should warned off, as he himself was warned off MIT the 1960s, 9 May 1986; memorandum containing updates on the Royal Society's Brain Drain Task Group, 23 May 1986;
JUNE 1986 Letters between McKenzie to Edmund Nickless, Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), Swindon, England, concerning McKenzie's proposal for a special project "Fundamental Processes of Geophysics, Mineral Physics and Geochemistry" [included], 12 May-2 June 1986;
JULY 1986 Copy letter from McKenzie to William 'Bill' Broman, General Manager, Exploration and Production Research, Shell Development Company, Houston, Texas, USA, clarifying his point that although Broman is impressed by Chris Scotese's current work, it has its origin in earlier plate tectonics research towards which the oil companies were initially actively hostile, believes that although Scotese's work is sound new ideas on petroleum geology will instead come from today's research on seismo-tectonics, two phase flow and chemical kinetics, 9 July 1986; draft press release of the NERC and SERC [Science and Engineering Research Council] Special Initiative in Geodesy, 22 July 1986; partial NERC Research Studentship Individual Quota award application for the joint project by McKenzie and Chris H Chapman, Professor of Geophysics, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, England, "Seismic Signatures of Convective, Tomographic and Geochemical Earth Models", [n.d.];
AUGUST-SEPTEMBER 1986 Copy letter from McKenzie to Drummond 'Drum' Matthews, [no address], detailing the problems with Matthews' research proposal for the Aegean, 7 August [1986]; letters between McKenzie and Doug Robinson, Department of Geology, University of Bristol, England, and editor of the 'Journal of the Geological Society', concerning editorial changes to his paper "The compaction of igneous and sedimentary rocks" ['Journal of the Geological Society of London', vol 144 (1987), pp299-307], 28 July-7 August 1987; James Jackson, Department of Geology and Geophysics, University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah, USA, changes to their joint paper [probably Jackson, J A & D McKenzie, "The relationship between plate motions and seismic moment tensors, and the rates of active deformation in the Mediterranean and Middle East", 'Geophysical Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society', vol 93 (1988), pp45-73], 8 August [1986]; copy letter from McKenzie to John Sclater, Institute for Geophysics, University of Texas at Austin, USA, has been surprised at how little current research is being done on the active continental deformation of the western part of the United States, and whilst there is an interest there are constraints on funding, suggests how this could be approached and which individuals may be interested, 29 September 1986; referee reports for the paper, Lennie, T B and D McKenzie, D R Moore & N O Weiss, "The breakdown of steady convection", 'Journal of Fluid Mechanics', vol 188 (1988), pp47-85, 8 September 1986; Freeman Gilbert, Institute of Geophysics & Planetary Physics, Scripps Institution for Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA, McKenzie's recent seminar on the use of theory of finite groups in convective instability was so well received that there have been calls for him to be hired permanently, asks McKenzie to consider Scripps for his future employment, 30 September 1986;
OCTOBER 1986 Professor Paul A Cross, Department of Surveying, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, forwarding a copy of his report on the fourth Wegener Meeting in Frankfurt, 7-8 October 1986 [included], emphasising the plans of the MEDLAS project to test the McKenzie hypothesis for describing the apparent plastic motion of rigid material, 20 October 1986; copy letter from McKenzie to Ulrich 'Uli' Christensen, [no address], is currently working on convective problems but is having issues with 3-D time dependent modelling codes, is interested in hearing from others working on the subject, 27 October 1986; Professor Joseph Rotblat, Chairman, British Pugwash Group, London, England, although the British government is a signatory of the tripartite Partial Test Ban Treaty, it is opposed to a comprehensive nuclear test ban on the grounds that it could not be verified, and is therefore seeking advice from scientists, 6 October 1986, with copy reply from McKenzie expressing his view that the US and British Governments have overestimated the magnitude required to differentiate between bombs and earthquakes, but some bomb testing can be carried out without being detected, 27 October 1986; Anthony 'Tony' Watts, Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University, New York, USA, wishes to spend his sabbatical the following year in Cambridge, lists his current research topics in marine geophysics and the compilation of gravity data over Africa and its continental margins, 18 September 1986, with copy reply from McKenzie pleased to accommodate Watts but suggesting funding may be an issue, 27 October 1986;
