DescriptionBrief file containing general correspondence of Dan McKenzie, Royal Society Research Professor (until 2006), Bullard Laboratories, Department of Earth Sciences, University of Cambridge, England, 2003-2013. The contents principally comprise various invitations or arrangements for McKenzie to attend symposia or social events or sit on committees, letters/copyright declarations from publishers, or fellow academics/scientists and members of the public seeking McKenzie's opinion on their works. Notably includes:

Professor Sir David King, Chief Scientific Advisor to HM Government and Head of the Office of Science and Technology, London, England, interested in McKenzie's views on the practicability of an unusual proposal to dispose of radioactive waste by injecting it deep into the Earth's mantle, which King presumes would have to be near areas of plate subduction, 4 February 2003, with printed email reply from McKenzie explaining that it would be impractical both because subduction zones are areas where large scale chemical transport occurs so unless waste is injected below this it is likely to make a return to the Earth's surface through deep sea vents or in magma from volcanoes, and the costs and time of drilling this deep would be very high, 9 February 2003; Alex N Halliday, Institute for Isotope Geology and Mineral Resources, Department of Earth Sciences, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich, Switzerland, has heard McKenzie has submitted something to 'Nature' regarding the situation at MPI Mainz [Max Planck Institute], encloses a copy of a letter he wrote to its president of the ill-advised decision to close its Divisions of Cosmochemistry and Geochemistry as these two fields are developing rapidly and their researchers are dominating the Earth science departments of top academic institutions of the world, 4 April 2003; printed email from McKenzie to Robert May, President, Royal Society, London, England, suggesting a new category of membership 'Junior Fellow' which would be applicable to those who hold Royal Society Research Fellowships as currently the RS loses touch with these scientists once their tenure comes to an end, 30 April 2003; completed Royal Society survey of holders of Research Professorships, May 2004; typescript copy of the foreword of Selley, R C and L R M Cocks & I R Plimer (eds), 'Encyclopedia of Geology', Oxford: Elsevier (2005), written by McKenzie, 20 June 2004; Vincent Courtillot, Director, Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris, France, informing McKenzie that he has been awarded its highest honorary degree, 27 July 2005; Office of the Provost, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, USA, inviting McKenzie to be the 2014 Hepsa Ely Silliman Lecturer, 11 May 2012.
