| Description | General and scientific correspondence of Dan Peter McKenzie, principally comprising: letters to and from fellow academics/geologists; invitations to present papers, attend symposia or write articles/books; requests for preprints; content and publication of McKenzie's papers. From 1974, the contents become a bit more generic, most of the letters concerning his scientific papers begin to be filed amongst his working files [series LDGSL/1107/B].
Note: Not all letters/postcards are described in the detailed descriptive catalogues, especially if the subject is routine or of limited interest. However the names of the major correspondents will still be added to the 'Creator Name' field. |
| Arrangement | This original, unsorted file series was essentially chronological, although most of the letters for each year were not in any particular order within each folder. Where possible, the letters have been arranged in a stricter chronological order and the files broken up into smaller sections for ease of storage, retrieval and description. For the period 1967-1969, there were multiple files which have been merged to avoid confusion. This was the period when McKenzie was a visiting fellow/scientist at a number of American universities and the series has been arranged to reflect the periods relating to each appointment.
In order to allow open access to McKenzie's general correspondence files, letters which are covered by confidentiality agreements or by the Data Protection Act - ie those concerning his duties as a Cambridge academic [and examiner of students] and referee for various peer reviewed journals [which includes confidential personal references for individuals] - have been separated into their own respective series, LDGSL/1107/A/2 & LDGSL/1107/A/3. |
