DescriptionWorking files relating to Dan McKenzie's PhD dissertation, King's College, Cambridge, University of Cambridge, [1965]-1968. Comprising:

1) File marked 'Some of the calculations for the viscosity of the lower mantle', containing manuscript notes, partial drafts*, equations* and data sets, and two sheets of notes made by Edward 'Teddy' Bullard*, head of the Department of Geophysics and Geodesy, University of Cambridge, England, commenting on an unknown manuscript of McKenzie's, dated 16 November 1965. Calculations in the file were used for the papers, McKenzie, D, "The viscosity of the lower mantle", 'Journal of Geophysical Research', vol 71 (1966), pp3995-4010 and McKenzie, D, "The viscosity of the mantle", 'Geophysical Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society', vol 14 (1966), pp297-305.

2) Brief file marked 'Convection review' containing two sheets of manuscript notes and equations, [1965-1966].

3) File marked 'v = v(T)', containing two sets of manuscript notes and equations, one on variable viscosity, [1965-1966].

4) File marked 'Creep & fracture, PhD diagrams notes, Earthquakes', containing manuscript notes and equations, [1965-1966], photocopy of published paper Nabarro, F R N, "The interaction of screw dislocations and sound waves", 'Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, A', vol 209 (1951), pp278-290, figures and tables from McKenzie's PhD, [1966]. Also included are two pieces of ephemera from the US on the back of which are written equations by other hands, the items dated 1967 and 1968 respectively.

5) File marked 'Electromagnetic induction', containing manuscript notes, equations and computer subroutine instructions, [1965-1966].

6) File marked 'Rotational perturbation of oscillating viscous sphere', containing manuscript equations and notes, [1965-1966], and likely to relate to the later published paper McKenzie, D, "The oscillations of a viscous gravitating sphere", 'Proceeding of the Cambridge Philosophical Society', vol 65 (1969), pp123-137.

7) File marked 'Lossy media', containing manuscript notes and equations, [1965-1966].

8) File marked 'Motion in the Core during Precession', containing manuscript notes, drafts, equations and bibliographic references, [1965-1966].

9) File marked 'PhD', containing typescript bibliography and manuscript draft of two of the diagrams (7.1 and 7.3) from McKenzie's PhD, [1966]. Also printed abstract for McKenzie's paper 'The mantle as an Einstein solid', from Runcorn, S K, 'Mantles of the Earth and Terrestrial Planets', Newcastle upon Tyne, (1967), the proceedings of a NATO Advanced Study Institute conference held in the University of Newcastle upon Tyne in March-April 1966.

10) File marked 'Popular Book' containing single sheet of notes mainly listing subjects to read about, [n.d.].

11) File marked 'Non equilibrium statistical thermo in rotating bodies', containing manuscript notes and equations, [1965-1966]. One of the sheets of notes is written on the back of a partial draft letter from McKenzie to Professor Oldroyd [?James Gardner Oldroyd], University of Liverpool, England, turning down the offer of a post at the university as he has just accepted his Fellowship and is still working on his PhD, [1965].

12) Three pages of manuscript notes probably for a talk, the pages entitled 'Orientation of Crystals' and 'Earthquakes & Mountains', [1965-1966].
