Description | Working file entitled 'Heat flow inside the island arcs of the northwestern Pacific [with] John [Sclater]; Heat flow & gravity anomalies; Heat flow & Ridge [with] John [Sclater]', relating to the paper: McKenzie, D & J G Sclater, "Heat flow inside the island arcs of the northwestern Pacific", ' Journal of Geophysical Research', vol 73 (1968), pp3173-3179.
The contents of the file include: manuscript notes, equations and data sets & plots [computer generated & ms] on heat flow surface deformation on ocean ridges; notes from and offprints of secondary sources such as a draft extract of Bill Menard's paper 'Vulcanism' on small ocean basins, [n.d.] and 'Japanese National Report for the UMP', National Committee for the UMP, Science Council of Japan (June 1967); figures used in the final published paper; letter from Freddie Sclater, John Sclater's wife about losing her husband's car keys and asking McKenzie if he has a spare [McKenzie and John Sclater shared a house whilst at Scripps].
Note: McKenzie has annotated the file, during the preparation process for the transfer of his archives to the Society, in 2014 - 'This paper is wrong'. |
Administrative History | Most of the notes in the file are undated, but the computer generated material is dated May 1967 and April 1968 and therefore covers the period when McKenzie was a visiting lecturer/Fellow at a number of US colleges & universities. His co-author, John Sclater, also studied for his PhD at the Department of Geodesy and Geophysics, Cambridge University, at the same time as McKenzie, and was subsequently based at Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego, USA, during the period when this paper was being written. |
