Administrative History | Arthur Henry Noble was born in London on 21 June 1887. He was educated at a private school, then entered Queen's College, Cambridge to study Natural Sciences. He graduated in 1909 and his first post was as a Demonstrator in Geology at the University of Leeds for a period of around six months. In the spring of 1910 he entered the employ of the Geological Survey, tasked with the mapping of London. He left the Survey in 1912 to join Royal Dutch (Shell), and was sent to Mexico as their chief geologist. Between 1915-1918 he served as a captain in the Royal Army Service, and on his return to Shell he was stationed in Iraq, Mexico, Sarawak (Borneo) and the Hague until his retirement in 1946. After retiring he was temporarily appointed Advise to Staff Department Shell Petroleum Co, his duties being to visit university departments to promote oil exploration as a career. He died on 18 July 1979. |
