Administrative History | The earthquake in the Pamir Mountains in the east of Tajikistan on 18 February 1911 was notable for geologists, as the accompanying landslip was so vast that it dammed one of the principal drainage valleys of the region [now named the Usoi Dam] and in doing so created a large permanent lake [Sarez Lake] of 15 miles in length and 900 feet in depth.
The geologist and seismologist Richard Dixon Oldham commissioned the translation of the Russian report which he described as the only first hand account of the aftermath of the earthquake, as part of the research for his paper on the subject which was read at the Ordinary Meeting of 8 November 1922. |
