Description | ‘Journal’, a record of the daily business of the Society's clerk, 5 July 1827-28 February 1839.
The first part of the volume concerns the activities of Samuel Taylor jnr in 1827, between c. 1830-1832 the entries become terser, usually involving mainly publication or election issues. Towards the back are receipts, signed by the Society's collector concerning the collecting of the annual membership fees, 1832-1837.
Samuel Taylor's daily activities record: visitors to the Museum and Library; production and sales of the Society's 'Transactions' and the first edition of the Greenough's 'Geological Map of England & Wales'; parcels received and sent; preparations for Council and Ordinary Meetings; decoration and repair; election of new members and the signing of the Obligation Book. The volume notably covers the period when the Society moved from its premises at Bedford Street to Somerset House in 1828. |
Administrative History | Samuel Taylor jnr was appointed as Clerk and Housekeeper in 1827. The volume was likely to have been instituted due to the dishonesty of the previous clerk, Edward Allen who absconded with the takings from the sales of the 'Transactions' in June 1827, which ultimately led to Thomas Webster's departure. |
