Description | Five, black and white, printed topographical maps of the Trichinopoly district of India - Naini Tal, Naini Tal & Almora, Udaiyarpalaiyam Taluk, Lalguidi Taluk - produced by the Survey Office of India, Calcutta, 1897-1924, which appear to have been used by Charles Alfred Matley during his visit to the district in February 1925 to explore the bone-beds first described by Henry Francis Blanford (1834-1893) in which were found remains of dinosaurs between 1857-1860 [See: "On the Cretaceous and other Rocks of the South Arcot and Trichinopoly districts, Madras", 'Memoirs of the Geological Survey of India', vol IV (1865), pp139-140]. At least four of the maps are annotated with some colouring, with descriptions of the rocks and fossils found at various locations along Matley's chosen route between Perambalur to Ariyalur. |
Provenance | The items were found amongst the backlog of material in the archives in a folder marked 'Trichinopoly' [in John Thackray's hand, archivist until 1999] with no author or other identifying features. It is unclear when the Society received the maps. |
