DescriptionFile relating to the subscription fund to commission a portrait bust of George Bellas Greenough, comprising: letter from William Daniel Conybeare to Dr Alexander Robert Sutherland, paying tribute to George Bellas Greenough as the 'Father of English Geology' and his contributions to the science, and suggesting that the Society should possess a memorial to mark his achievements for future members, 15 February [1842]; rough list of subscribers, including a number of signatures, [July 1842]; letter in small envelope from Richard Westmacott to Sutherland forwarding his bill, stating that he is pleased with his work, 4 August 1843; final list of subscribers, with amounts given with a note commenting that Murchison apparently paid twice, [c.November 1843]; vellum covered banker's book of the Greenough Bust Fund account, 1842-1843.
Administrative HistoryFellows were asked to subscribe the sum of two guineas each, although a small number paid £2. Dr Alexander Robert Sutherland, MD, acted as treasurer. The finished bust, sculpted by Richard Westmacott at a cost of £100, was completed in 1843.
