| Description | Six manuscript notebooks of William Archibald Macfadyen, mainly covering the period of 1950-1955 during which he made the majority of his site assessment surveys. The notebooks generally contain his notes on the appearance of each site, with a small number of rough thumbnail sketches of site locations or geological features. Also includes bibliographic references with extracts from related published sources written on the area, and lists of contacts.
Comprising:
1) 'Geol. N.B.31. Kenya, Extracts & Nature Conservancy 20 Dec 1948 - 22 Sep 1950.' The volume initially concerns Macfadyen's hydrogeological work in Kenya in 1948-1949. Page 108, dated 3 July 1950, onwards relates to his work for the Nature Conservancy.
2) 'Geol.N.B.34. Nature Conservancy 7 Jan 1952 - 30 Sept 1952.'
3) 'Geol.N.B.35 Nature Conservancy 1 Oct 1952 - 18 June 1953.'
4) 'Geol.N.B.36. Nature Conservancy 22 Jun 1953 - 28 Apr 1954'. Contains extensive notes on the Piltdown Man fraud, which had just been uncovered, although the site had been granted NNR status in 19 May 1952.
5) 'Geol.N.B.37 Nature Conservancy 3 May 1954 - 22 Dec 1954.'
6) 'Geol.N.B.38 Nature Conservancy 11 Jan 1955 - 28 Nov 1955.' |
