Administrative History | Following the breakdown in health of the incumbent curator, William Lonsdale, the Society relieved him of his museum duties and placed the following advertisement in the pages of the 'The Times', 31 January 1838, seeking a replacement:
"GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY - WANTED, a CURATOR, qualified to arrange and take charge of the museum ; containing organic fossil remains, rock specimens and minerals. Salary £125 per annum. Apply by letter to the Secretary, Geological Society of London, Somerset-house."
A special Committee was formed to procure a Curator which recommended Searles Valentine Wood, officially appointed at the Council Meeting of 25 April 1838. |
