Administrative History | The section appears to be a visualisation of the text description: "A description of the several strata of earth, stone, coal, &c found in a Coal-Pit at the West End of Dudley in Staffordshire: By Mr Fettiplace Bellers, FRS. To which is added, a Table of Specifick Gravity of each Stratum: by Mr Francis Hauksbee, FRS. Communicated by Dr Hans Sloane, RS Secretary", Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, vol 27 (1710), pp541-544.
The regional terms for used the strata could indicate the item's connection to the activities of the Committee of Nomenclature which was formed on 6 May 1808. The Committee sought to collate information on the various provincial terms which were prevalent around the country in order to create a standardised, uniform language for mineralogy and geology. By 1811 it was found too difficult and the idea was abandoned. See: LDGSL/947/4/2 |
