1) 'Sandstone at the new cut, River Avon, Bristol', [1810] 18.3cm x 13.6cm
2) Long, untitled view of cliff or cutting probably showing the limestone strata at Clifton, Bristol, [1812]. The caption reads: “From hence there is a good opportunity afforded to take the inclination of the surface which is so small an angle that I will not give it without careful measuring – The general Dip is as near as possible at an angle of 45 degrees.” 55.4cm x 13cm
3) 'Cave lately found at Redland', 26 April 1812. 22.6cm x 15cm |
Administrative History | The text accompanying drawings two and three is "The strata here described compose the rocks opposite to the Hotwell walks, are further illustrated by two drawings the one of the external face of the rocks; the other of a large cavern recently discovered. In clearing the ground for the erection of houses opposite to the old York Hotel on Clifton downs, some interesting varieties of Sulphat of Strontian were met with, but the place being now covered with buildings and Garden grounds there is little likelihood of its being soon again opened to the researches of the Mineralogist.” GSL/OM/1/1, 6 Nov 1812. |
CustodialHistory | Drawings still retain their original portfolio mount, with annotations by Thomas Rupert Jones. |
Provenance | Presented to the Society by Cumberland. The drawing of the 'Sandstone at the new cut, River Avon, Bristol likely to have been given on 4 May 1810 along with some specimens.
The other two drawings were given, on 6 November 1812 accompanying a communication by Cumberland 'relative to the limestone strata in the neighbourhood of Bristol', see GSL/OM/1/1, 6 November 1812. |
