Description | Peter Orlando HUTCHINSON, painting of trace fossils from the New Red Sandstone of High Peak Hill, Sidmouth, [?1858].
The caption reads: "Organic remains in the Red Sandstone Formation at High Peak Hill, a mile and a half west of Sidmouth, scale - one inch to a foot. [under left hand image] These examples are seen projecting from the perpendicular face of the cliff. Traces of a softer medullary passage run through some of the specimens. The composition is much the same as the cliff, but harder. At this spot they occur at about 300 below the upper surface of the red marl. [under right hand image] This example (different from the others) is on and in a horizontal slab, dry at low water. One example shews a root, with the rising stalk broken off. The external surface is commonly warty. No traces of vertibrae [sic] appear." |
