Level | SubSeries |
Extent | 152 drawings mounted on 66 sheets |
Format | Photograph/drawing/painting/print |
Description | Watercolour and pencil studies, mostly of fragments or incomplete specimens of fossil fish generally taken from British palaeontological collections, including those belonging to: Captain Theobald Jones; Dr Daniel Reid Rankin; Samuel Hibbert [Ware]; Captain Joseph Portlock; Professor Robert Jameson; the Royal Society of Edinburgh; Roderick Murchison; Sir Philip de Malpas Grey Egerton; William Willoughby Cole, Earl of Enniskillen; William Buckland; Elizabeth Philpot; William Anstice; Bristol Museum; James Johnson; and Alexander Robertson of Elgin. Drawn as part of the research for Louis Agassiz's 'Recherches sur les Poissons Fossiles' (1833-1843/1844) but not always published. |
Arrangement | The historical arrangement (if there was any) of this series has mostly been retained, however some of the drawings are marked with numbers which indicate a working batch reference for the artist. Where these occur, ie within the drawings of the collection of Captain Theobald Jones, they have been reordered. The historical reference is noted in the Alt Ref and Museum Ref fields. |
