Description | Watercolour painting by Jonathan STIVEN, of two views of a fossil bone [humerus from Saurodesmus robertsoni Seeley] from Linksfield, 1840, found by Alexander ROBERTSON of Elgin.
Annotated in pencil 'Malcolmson (Wealden Elgin) 1838 Proc vol 3, p141, which refers to: Malcolmson, J G. "On the relations of the different parts of the Old Red Sandstone, in which organic remains have recently been discovered, in the counties of Murray, Nairn, Banff, and Inverness", Proceedings of the Geological Society of London', vol 3, (1839) pp141-144. The locality is closer to Malcolmson's earlier paper "On the occurrence of Wealden strata at Linksfield, near Elgin; on the remains of fishes in the Old Red Sandstone of that neighbourhood; and on raised beaches along the adjacent coast" Proceedings of the Geological Society of London', vol 2, (1838) pp667-669. Both papers precede the creation of the watercolour, and neither makes mention of the bone. |
