| Description | Monochrome lithographs issued by the United States Geological Survey, [1878-1899]. Series 1-2 were lithographs of the bones of sauropods and brontotheres lithographed by E Crisand, New Haven, after drawings by Frederick Berger, under the supervision of Othniel Charles MARSH, [1878-1899].
The plates in series 3 are attributed to Edward Drinker Cope and possibly intended for the monograph, 'Tertiary Formations of the West', Report of the United States Geological Survey of the Territories Volume III (1884). The base paper of this set of prints is of a poorer quality to the other two series, and is probably the same stock used for general publications. |
| Administrative History | According to the article Osborn, H F. "USGS unpublished lithographic plates", 'Science', vol 74 (1931) pp43-44, the lithographs were distributed by the United States Geological Survey for research and educational purposes to the principal centres and libraries of geology. 71 sets were sent to US institutions and 71 to institutions abroad. Another 350 sets were kept in reserve for other libraries to apply for. There were originally 213 plates covering the palaeontological works of Othniel Charles Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope which were published by the USGS. |
