Administrative History | The Committee, formed in 1845, consisted of: the President & General Secretary of the British Association; the President of the Geological Society who acted as convenor; the Director of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom; the Professors of Geology at Oxford and Cambridge Universities; George Bellas Greenough; Richard John Griffith; Major Thomas Henry Shadwell Clerke; and Thomas Sopwith. Its remit was to chart every region in the globe, with special reference to steam navigation and steam power for the manufacturing industry, where coal capable of being used as fuel was known to exist. |
