DescriptionJohn MacCulloch's Geological map of Scotland, published by Samuel Arrowsmith, 1836. 4 inches to the mile.
Administrative HistoryThe map took John MacCulloch 16 years to complete and as he was the first government sponsored geological surveyor in Britain, there were a number of complaints about the use of public money for his annual summer field trips. Unfortunately the map was published posthumously. MacCulloch died following a fall from his carriage whilst on honeymoon in Cornwall.
CustodialHistoryUntil the Bicentenary refit in 2006, the map hung on the wall of Society's apartments. There was an attempt to conserve the map, but the many years of varnish had degraded the paper beyond repair.
