Description | Letter from George Poulett SCROPE, Cobham, to Archibald Geikie, 21 Jan 1874. Re: is glad that Geikie agrees with his criticism of Robert Mallet's volcanic theories as does Ramsay, has heard that Mallet is writing a reply to be published in the next issue of 'Geological Magazine' but states that he will not be drawn into a 'personal controversy'; early geological memories of Cambridge in 1818, and of first meeting with Charles Lyell in 1823, George Bellas Greenough 'died a consistent Wernerian'; approves of a new paper by J W Judd on the ancient volcanoes of the Highlands. |
Administrative History | The initial paper referred to in the letter is: Scrope, G P, "Observations on Mr Robert Mallet's Paper on Volcanic Energy in the Philosophical Transactions for 1873 page 147", 'Geological Magazine', Decade 2, vol 1 (1874), pp28-34. Despite Scrope's assertions, there were a number of published back and forth communications appearing in the journal. |
