| Description | Charlotte Murchison's personal copy of the book 'The Republic of Cicero', translated from the Latin by George Featherstonehaugh, New York: G & C Carvell (1829). The book is dedicated to Roderick Murchison but at the front is a mss letter from Featherstonehaugh to Charlotte Murchison sending her the book dated 20 February 1829. Contemporary black leather binding with gold tooling in a modern, leather covered solander box. |
| Provenance | Donated by Prof Richard Howarth, date unclear. It was amongst the backlog of material found by the archivist in 2010. It was not added to the collection because it is non-geological. The note attached, written by Wendy Cawthorne (Assistant Librarian), read "Donated by Prof Howarth to the Society for Auction". As so much time has passed, Prof Howarth doesn't recall giving us the volume but thinks it may have been in the late 1990s or early 2000s. He tentatively suggested it could have been in his later father-in-law's collection who inherited books from his relative Herbert Squance (a noted book collector in Sunderland). However he is not certain.
Since the book's original donation, the profile of Charlotte Murchison has risen. As the translator was also a geologist and the volume is dedicated to Roderick Murchison, it has finally been added to the collection in August 2026. |
