Description | Murchison correspondence: letter from Henry FREARS, Moscow, 15 Oct 1842. Re:thanks Murchison for sending him a preprint of his papers on the geology of Russia, but correcting Murchison's Russian spelling for 'Tchornozem' [Chernozem]; believes Murchison's theory of the soil's origin is correct; disappointed that the casts he had previously sent were broken, will send more; his recent trips to investigate the oolitic geology of Russia, thinks he has identified over 100 species of belemnites; had planned to go to the Caucasus of Georgia but had to cancel due to the sudden illness of his son; disappointed that Murchison's new work will be confined only to the geology of Russia; has acquired a 'goodly' collection of fossils throughout his 12 years in the country; recent publication and his translation work. |
