Re: hopes Murchison has received the mammoth flesh, was planning to send more but the museum's curator was unavailable as he has taken to drink, but will endeavour to send something through his friend Mr Williams of King's College Cambridge who is currently in Russia; Eichwald's paper on the geology of Sweden; descriptions of his findings from recent geological excursions around Moscow; disagrees with Pander's theory of the upheaval of Mountain Limestone causing fracturing; also disagrees with Keyserling's comments about the uniformity of the dip of the limestone beds, has found Orthoceras and Gigas specimens which indicate a 'deep sea' formation, with thumbnail sketch of the former for Murchison to identify; reiterates his willingness to send fossil specimens from Russia. |
