Re: Hopes the decision that geologists at the Survey no longer have to pass civil service exams will apply retrospectively to James Croll; keen that the vacancy in the Scottish Survey be filled before his return; is exploring the volcanic region around Naples with Joseph Prestwich, plans to travel to Lipari the next day; met a number of scientific acquaintances in Rome including Joseph Barclay Pentland, Édouard Verneuil and Mrs Somerville.
