DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from General [?Michael Silvius] von HOHENHAUSEN, 16 Jun 1847. Re: Believes the love of science can unite all nations; thanks Murchison for sending his description of the geology of Gotland and expresses the gratitude of the others who Murchison acknowledged in his work; hopes to have the honour of receiving Murchison if he returns to Gotland.

Also includes letter from Countess Ebba SCHÜRER VON WALDHEIM, Visby, Sweden, 8 Jun 1847. Re: Thanks for the gift of Murchison's work on the Silurian rocks of Sweden; Mr Marklin of Upsala is in Visby and she is keen to learn more about geology from him, the world now being 'geological-mad' with Professor Nilsson lecturing in Stockholm to Royalty, ladies and a large audience; Murchison's theory that Scania was once the coast of Germany; her children were proud to see her name in print in Murchison's work, expects Visby to become fashionable; General von Hohenhausen's health, worry about the dearth of corn and potatoes; acquaintances in Visby; despite Murchison's encouragement to write, the result was not successful; remembrance to Mr Verneuil.
