DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from Leonard HORNER, Bedford Place, London, 21 Nov 1845. Re: Thanks Murchison for his 'great and beautiful book' which he received last night, wonders if he could obtain a set of the plates for his illustrated copy of Morris' catalogue which is going well; Morris proposed as a member the previous week; last meeting when Lyell read his paper on the remains under the newest lava stream in the Auvergne, Lyell's lecture [in the US] before 2000 people although 14000 applied; Lyell referring to a Mastodon found in New Jersey now on display at Harvard which shows the mistakes in the construction of the specimen in the British Museum; [Albert] Koch is at it again displaying a creature which includes a paddle made out of sections from a nautilus [Hydarchos]; first part of Faraday's paper on the relation of magnetism and light read at the Royal Society the previous night, alongside a paper by Mrs Somerville on the action of light on vegetable juices; Buckland still not 'gazetted' but hopes to see him in his silk petticoat at the next meeting; pleased to hear that Mrs Murchison's health has improved.
