Description | Murchison correspondence: letter from William HUTTON, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, 4 Feb 1830. Re: Eager to renew acquaintance with Murchison as his last correspondence resulted in the collaboration with John Lindley for their joint Fossil Flora publication; included in a box of fossils sent to Lindley are specimens for the Society of the 'immense fossil tree' found at Wideopen, their joint friend Mr Witham should have also sent a sample, thinks it to be Dicotyledonous; suggested to Lindley a notice on the tree should be read to the Society; encourages Murchison to call upon Lindley to see a drawing of the tree and of a specimen of Stigmaria variolaria lately found; hopes the first part of the Fossil Flora publication will increase subscribers, wishes to dedicate the publication to the Society; includes printed circular for the newly formed Natural History Society, Newcastle upon Tyne, dated 12 December 1829. |
Administrative History | The Hutton and Lindley publication became: 'The fossil flora of Great Britain; or, figures and descriptions of the vegetable remains found in a fossil state in this country'. London: James Ridgway (1831-1837). |
