Description | Murchison correspondence: letter from James HALL, Albany, USA, 29 Jan 1847. Re: Assures Murchison that he has no intention of 'abandoning' the Lower Silurian for the Cambrian although he previously thought to propose that if Murchison would consent to give up his Lower Silurian to Sedgwick and confine the Silurian to the central portion of the strata originally defined "all parties would be harmonized", but now no longer considers it possible; explains his discussions with Verneuil on the subject and why he had never referred to 'Lower Silurian' in his papers; regrets Upper Silurian has not been retained as the Ludlow rocks seem to correlate with the Hamilton group so he is now compelled to designate it Devonian which he disagrees with, suggests that it would be better if the Silurian terminated with a conglomerate and was succeeded with a Red Sandstone with Holoptychius; requests Murchison's views on the subject as he is preparing the second volume of his work comparing American geological strata with that of Europe; plans to send Murchison a copy of the first volume although the plates are not yet ready. |
