DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from Joseph Beete JUKES, Rugeley, Staffordshire, 23 November 1850. Re: thanks Murchison for a 'flattering' testimonial for his professorship application but is unsure if he will be successful; criticism in a leading paper against 'importing an Englishman' to succeed Oldham.
Administrative HistoryJoseph Beete Jukes became the local directors of the Geological Survey or Ireland, succeeding Thomas Oldham (1816-1878), on 30 November 1850. Alongside his directorship of the Survey, Oldham had held the chair of geology in Trinity College, Dublin, and Jukes had hoped to do likewise. However the chair instead went to Samuel Haughton.
