Description | Murchison correspondence: letter from Charles LYELL, Kinnordy, 11 Aug 1829. Re: [William Henry] Fitton is indisposed as his wife is ill; has seen all the coast from Walton [-on the Naze] to Hunstanton and calls the Crag the "greatest hoax" that has "ever been practiced on our credulity", with detailed description of its make up and thumbnail drawn section; opinion of John Phillips of Yorkshire; went to Shap [Cumbria] to study the Stainmore Range and correlate the formations with the Jura mountains; [Adam] Sedgwick has shown him a section near Sunderland which he compares to his observations in Auvergne and Tivoli; working at learning German with his sister and has read one third of Hoff; trusts that he will make his sketch of the progress of geology popular [ie 'Principles of Geology']. |
