DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from Charles LYELL, [?winter 1829]. Re: Has finally received authors' copies from [Robert] Jamieson [presumably for Lyell 's & Murchison's paper "On the Excavation of Valleys, as illustrated by the Volcanic Rocks of Central France", 'Edinburgh New Philosophical Journal', vol 7 (1829), pp15-48]; [William] Lonsdale is keen that George Poulett Scrope's paper '"On the gradual Excavation of Valleys..." be read at the OGM straight after Murchison's but Lyell thinks it should be at a separate meeting; his forthcoming article on Saussure; asks Murchison' thoughts on [John] Fleming's 'shot at C L B' and quotes William Buckland's opinion; distribution of ?authors' copies of their article.
Administrative HistoryScrope's paper was eventually read before the Society on 5 February 1830, and published only in abstract form as: Scrope, G P, "On the gradual Excavation of Valleys in which the Meuse, the Moselle, and some other Rivers flow", 'Proceedings of the Geological Society of London', vol 1 (1830), pp170-171.
