DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from Charles LYELL, 22 Dec 1831. Re: concerns about his taking up the time consuming Professorship of Geology at King's College London as he realises it will seriously affect his progress in geology and the amount of time he can spend on producing the second edition of 'Principles of Geology'; if the income from the classes was twice as much, he would be happy to devote himself to his literary endeavours and occasional tours, only accepted the post as he was soon to be married; would recommend John Phillips to the College as his replacement and considers how Phillips might live on the small stipend which Lyell was given, asks Murchison to sound Phillips out to see if he would be interested; plans to give away tickets for his next lectures to any person who could possibly subscribe.
Administrative HistoryLyell was the first Professor of Geology at the newly opened King's College London in 1831. He eventually resigned in October 1833.
