DescriptionMurchison correspondence: letter from Samuel STUTCHBURY, Bristol, 8 Dec 1837. Re: Is extremely flattered that Murchison has offered him the post of assistant curator of the Geological Society's Museum, but turns it down after considering the financial implications, is pleased that Murchison has found more material to support his theories regarding the geology of Devon [?Devonian controversy], has just acquired some fossils from the black limestone of Barnstaple which Murchison may like and a recently acquired specimen of a Plesiosaurus macrocephalus found near Keynsham and another from Upton Cheney which were presented to the Bristol Institution by Mr [?Joseph] Parker.
Administrative HistoryThe health of William Lonsdale, who was appointed curator in 1829, had broken down from overwork and he could no longer undertake his duties.
